From Carta to Sighisoara

Leaving Carta we crossed the OLT river over a dam.  We arrived in the next village called ‘Nou Roman’ just as the church bells were ringing…we were invited in and were amazed at the beautiful décor in this orthodox church.

We passed through a couple of villages and then came the rain.  Wet and cold as we ascended through the Transylvanian mountains. We stopped for an  instant coffee in a tiny village.  P1040008.JPG

The bike ride continued through beautiful forests, small villages and many fortified churches.  The final stop was Biertan.  Our pension was on the edge of the citadel.

The cemetery was spectacular – graves from hundreds of years ago to the present on a terraced slope adjacent to one of the oldest parts of Sighisoara- beautifully landscaped – we should have checked it out at night!

We ended the evening on a high note at a great restaurant – a large menu with plentiful choices of beer (until the waitress told us they only had one type) and pages of entrees – until the waitress told us that they only had Sarmale (fabulous cabbage rolls served with polenta – fortunately our favourite!) We finished off with a home made cherry brandy that we wanted to buy by the bottle!
